Statement | On Transformation and Dreams
I often contemplate the boundless universe and my place in it. This work is a meditation on that contemplation. The work gazes into the eternal. Time reflects on time. Time is a continuity, broken by memory. Being, consumed by the eternal, the eternal consuming the soul, the soul consumed by time. Arriving, returning conscious, the place remains the same; enlightenment transforms the encounter.
The photographs, all made in Antarctica, focus on aspects of the natural world through the use of long exposure and framing. Time is drawn out in long exposure and placed in dialogue with substance. Natural phenomena persist over eons. They have preceded us from the origin of time and will persist long after our contemplation of them.
This work is a finite glimpse into the relentless rhythms and immensity of nature. It is easy to get lost in the great expanse and feel insignificant. By contemplating a familiar unit of time—a discrete glimpse into existence—the work attempts to meld mortality into an infinite cycle and allow the viewer to connect with the world in a profound way.
